Rhee appeared on Oprah the day Newsweek came out and got so many donations—100,000 within forty-eight hours, totaling more than $1 million—that they blew out the computers serving the “donate” section of the StudentsFirst website, which actually was a section of the DFER website, because DFER was still serving as the fund-raising conduit for Rhee’s start-up organization. Meantime, she had gathered more than $100 million in donations or pledges from heavy hitters such as Eli Broad, Rupert Murdoch, Julian Robertson, Ken Langone, and the Fisher family that had founded the Gap (and was a major KIPP benefactor).
